National Dunhuang Yadun Geological Park (Gansu, China): a river-deposits statue, caved by water and wind over the past 12000 year, witnessing the change of climate.
Dust is an emerging core theme in Earth system studies. While dust as aerosol is known to have a significant climate forcing, the role of dust in the Earth system extends well beyond the impact on radiation, as it involves in a wide range of natural physical, chemical and bio-geochemical processes on a spectrum of scales. Dust contributes directly to the carbon cycle and transports iron that is critical to ocean biomass productivity and air-sea CO2 exchange. A better representation of dust in global climate models is important for reduced uncertainties in climate projections. In this symposium, supported by the Sino-German Science Centre, we intend to examine the link between dust and climate change in the past, present and future from a multi-disciplinary perspective. We also hope to identify the research frontiers of dust research. Interested colleagues are warmly invited to attend. The symposium program (preliminary) and location is as attached.
