    DESMEX: Deep Electromagnetic Sounding for Mineral Exploration:

    An open student assistant position (SHK/WHK, 8 h / weak) is available a.s.a.p in the applied geophysics working group (RG Tezkan). During Summer 2016 and 2017 large scale semi-airborne CSEM and LOTEM surveys were conducted to investigate deep mineral deposits down to 1000 m depth. This year a semi-airborne survey is planned to explore massive ore deposits in Kiruna/Sweden. The survey is part of the DESMEX project.

    Major tasks of the student assistant working on this topic are:
    • processing of LOTEM and CSEM data from conducted surveys; visualization of EM data
    • forward and inverse modeling of LOTEM and CSEM data
    • handling of geophysical devices
    • preparation of CSEM survey in Kiruna; field work assistance during surveys

    Airborne remote sensing of mixed-phase clouds during ACLOUD

    During summer 2017, the working group Integrated Remote Sensing (AG Crewell) of the University of Cologne performed a large field campaign (Arctic CLoud Observations Using airborne measurements during polar Day:ACLOUD) with two research aircraft Polar 5 & 6 of the Alfred-Wegener-Institute of Polar and Oceanic Research out of Longyearbyen Spitsbergen. The campaign is part of the research initiative Arctic Amplification: Climate Relevant Atmospheric and Surface Processes and Feedback Mechanisms(AC) which aims to understand the amplified increase in surface temperature in the Arctic.

    One of the major targets of the field campaign is the observation of Arctic mixed-phase clouds over open water and sea ice with remote sensing (Polar 5) and in-situ (Polar 6) instrumentation. The tasks of the Student Assistant working on this topic:

    • get an overview of the flights and data collected
    • visualize the data collected with MiRAC (Microwave Radar and radiometer for Arctic Clouds), the instrument of AG Crewell
    • perform simple statistics on the data (cloud free scenes, flight altitude, open water/sea ice, precipitation,...)

Simulation of geochemical cycles with MATLAB:

The Computational Geosciences group is looking for a Student Assistant (SHK/WHB) (m/f) to work on numerical simulations of geochemical cycles. Work load is flexible (9–19 hr/week).

Your task: Implement numerical models in MATLAB, including graphical user interfaces (GUIs), to simulate different aspects of Earth system evolution, including:

  • the responses of atmosphere and ocean to the combustion of fossil fuels
  • the influence of biological activity on the variation of seawater composition between ocean basins
  • the oxidation-reduction balance of the deep sea
  • perturbations of the climate system and their effect on surface temperatures
  • carbon isotopes and the influence of fossil fuel combustion
  • the effect of evaporation on the composition of seawater
  • diagenesis in carbonate sediments

You will have the opportunity to write a Master Thesis in a related topic and to participate in interdisciplinary research with different groups of the Department of Geosciences. Moreover, the computer programs will be considered as teaching material for the new lecture “Quantitative modeling and simulation of geochemical cycles” at the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy.

You bring: ongoing Bachelor or Master in Physics, Chemistry, Computer Sciences, Engineering or Geosciences; knowledge of MATLABand differential equations.

CFD simulations of turbulent surface winds over complex topography:

The Computational Geosciences group at the University of Cologne invites applications for a Research Assistant / PhD position to work on CFD simulations of turbulent surface winds over complex topograph starting as soon as possible. The position is offered within the research project “Optimization of aeolian soil erosion control with sand fences”, funded by the German Research Foundation, and is initially for 3 years with a weekly working time of 29.87 hours (75% position). The salary is based on the German TV-L E13 scale if terms and conditions under collective bargaining law are fulfilled.

Job description:
The candidate will apply CFD simulations to model turbulent surface winds over complex topographies, in particular dunes in presence of obstacles such as sand fences and other types of windbreaks. These simulations shall be coupled to an existing continuum sand transport model to predict the changes in topography due to wind-blown sand. This is an interdisciplinary project in which the candidate will collaborate closely with the Atmospheric Modeling group of the Institute of Geophysics and Meteorology, the Applied Geomorphology and GIS & Remote Sensing groups of the Institute of Geography and the Granular Matter group of the Physics Department and the DLR / Cologne. Moreover, the candidate will have the opportunity to actively participate in field experiments to validate the numerical simulations.

Requirements:
We expect excellent knowledge of Theoretical and Computational Fluid Dynamics, and strong interest in computational and physical modeling of turbulent surface wind flows over aeolian sediment landscapes. Applicants should have a Master-of-Science-equivalent university degree in geophysics, meteorology, physics, mathematics or computer sciences, preferentially in the field of CFD, and strong background in scientific programming. Preference will be given to candidates with very good knowledge of C++ and experience with OpenFOAM. Candidates must have excellent communication skills both in written and spoken English.
