2 Module objectives and skills to be acquired

Practical experience in direct current resistivity and electromagnetic prospection techniques, survey design, target identification, resolution of the methods, data evaluation, 1D and 2D modelling. General overview of the methods and their strength and weaknesses.
Skills to be acquired:
  • Ability to plan, conduct, protocol, interpret and document direct current resistivity and electromagnetic geophysical measurements
  • Ability to choose the most appropriate method for a given exploration problem
  • The ability in scientific writing is trained
3 Module content
  • Direct Current Method with Multielectrode System (2D-DC)
  • Radiomagnetotelluric (RMT)
  • Loop Source Transient Electromagnetic Soundings (TEM)
  • LOTEM data analysis and modelling
  • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) / Ground conducting meters (HLEM)
  • Conventional processing and interpretation techniques for above geophysical methods
Accounting for new developments in electromagnetic methods of applied geophysics and/or instrumentation the above methods and their interpretation techniques may be replaced.

Practical training (as a field course, including tutorials), seminar about methods
5 Requirements for participation

Formal: None.
The content of the course requires the undergraduate knowledge of mathematics, physics and applied geophysics (basics of electric and electromagnetic methods).
6 Type of examination

Written report (graded). The "Guidelines of the University of Cologne on good scientific practice" (Official Communications of the University of Cologne 8/2022) apply.
7 Credits awarded

The module is passed, and the credit points will be awarded, if
  1. the practical training is passed (ungraded); this is the case when all practical experiments have been passed. A practical experiment is considered to have been passed if, before the start of an experiment, sufficient knowledge of the theory and the implementation of the respective experiment (this includes in particular a written measurement preparation) has been proven in the context of an attestation, the specified measurements themselves were carried out individually or in a group, and were fully recorded in writing; and
  2. the written report (graded) is passed.

Suitable as an elective course for physics students.
