Description/
Content
Exploration of the earth's crust and of the superior mantle with seismic reflection and electromagnetic methods. In the foreground there are practical topics such as crude oil and natural gas exploration, geothermics and geologic tectonic processes like plate tectonics, continental drift, plate margins, subduction zones, volcanism, mantle convection and geodynamic processes.
This module imparts basics and physical backgrounds of seismic reflection and electromagnetic methods (Magnetotellurik, Transientelektromagnetik). At that point, the application of these methods on crude oil and geothermic exploration and the solution of geologic tectonic processes in the earth's crust have priority. In the tutorials students will get to know interpretation and modeling procedures of the applied methods.
Within the internship students are imparted the interpretation of seismic reflection procedures as well as practical application of electromagnetic methods.

Organisation and teaching styleLecture, tutorials, internships
The module is offered for students of the bachelor course "Physics" with a total extent of 8 credit points due to the reduction of the internship.

Course assessment,
assessment mode

This module is a compensable electoral module. It is passed if

  1. lectures and tutorials were attended regularly and successfully (50% of the accessible points have to be gained).
  2. the internship was attended successfully.
  3. the test is passed. If the test is not passed there will be the opportunity for a timely re-test (written or oral). If the re-test is not passed there will be the opportunity for a second oral examination. If this one is not passed the module is failed finally.
The module mark is the mark of the test (respectively of the re-test).
Learning/ qualification targetsThe aim is to make students familiar with the basics of seismic reflection and deepness electromagnetic and to teach them in dealing with analysis programs. The application to the exploration of deeper layers of the earth has priority.
Prerequisites for attending

Passed Modules:

  1. Einführung in die Geophysik und Meteorologie
  2. Experimentalphysik I
  3. Experimentalphysik II
  4. Mathematische Methoden der Physik
Frequency of the offerEvery 2nd winter semester
Imparted interdisciplinary competencies and soft skills---
Applicability in other courses of studiesThis module is suitable as electoral subject of the bachelor course "Physics". The examination board can admit exceptions of the prerequisites for attending for minor subject students.
Accumulation in overall markYes, weighted with the factor 15/180.
