Description/ Content

Students get to know important geophysical methods in praxis. Usually, a preliminary introduction takes place in the laboratory, whereas the proper experiments take place in the field. Following experiments will be offered:

  • Determination of electric conductivity of soil samples
  • Multi-electrode geoelectric
  • Radiomagnetotelluric (with record of time series)
  • Gravimetry
  • Magnetic (under application of a base station)
  • Seismic refraction
The test execution has to be documented as a measurement report. Measurement report and evaluation of the experiment have to be handed in within two weeks after the execution.
Obligatory literature
  • P. Kearey et al.: An introduction to geophysical exploration; Blackwell Publishing, 2002
Additional literature
  • W.E. Telford et al.: Applied Geophysics, Cambridge University Press, 1999
  • J. Reynolds: An Introduction to Applied and Environmental Geophysics, John Wiley & sons Ltd., 1997
  • K. Knödel et al., Umweltgeophysik, Springer Verlag, 1997
Organisation and teaching styleStudents prepare the basics of the experiments in groups. To applicate the methods students conduct, also in groups, measurements and analyze them independently according to the instruction (partly with modern software). Experiments are documented in written form.
Course assessment, assessment mode

This module is a compensable electoral module. It is passed if

  1. the internship was attended successfully. Before every experiment, a attestation about the execution of the experiment can take place. In case of not passing the attestation the student can retry it once. If the attestation is not passed several times it is recommended to attend the course of the module again. The evaluations of the attestations are "passed" or "not passed". The internship is passed if all experiments were passed. In case of not passing an evaluation the student can retry it once. If the evaluation is not passed several times it is recommended to retry the course of the module.
  2. the test is passed. The passed internship is a prerequisite for the permission to the test. In case of not passing the test there will be the opportunity of a re-test (written or oral). If the re-test is not passed it is recommended to attend the course of the module again with a subsequent second re-test. Already attested experiments will not be accredited. In case of not passing the second re-test the module is failed finally.
The module mark is the mark of the test (re-test).
Learning/ qualification targetsStudents get to know classic geophysical measurement methods in laboratory. They are supposed to get familiar with the basics of methods and schooled in dealing with typical analyze programs.
