MN-GM-METPRA
StructureCourseCredit pointsDuration (SWS)Workload (h)
Internship55150
Total55150
Description/ Content
  • Execution of meteorological field measurements (insitu and remote sensing)
  • Execution of radiosonde ascensions and piloting
  • Introduction to measurement techniques and interconnection of instruments for real-time usage
  • Execution of calibrations and compare measurements
  • Error analysis including compare measurements
  • Interpretation of simultaneous  measurements of different instruments to characterize the meteorological situation
  • Excursion to meteorological observatories (e. g. Lindenberg or Cabauw) to get to know the latest meteorological measurement systems
Obligatory literature
  • H. Kraus, 2005: Die Atmosphäre der Erde. Eine Einführung in die Meteorologie. Springer Verlag Heidelberg, Paperback Vieweg Verlag
  • Script (provided)
Additional literature
  • Fred V. Brock, Scott J. Richardson, 2001: Meteorological Measurement Systems, Oxford University press
Organisation and teaching styleStudents prepare the basics of the experiments in groups. To applicate methods, students execute, also in groups, measurements and analyze them independently according to the instruction.  Experiments are documented written.
Course assessment, assessment mode

This module is a compensable electoral module. It is passed if

  1. the internship was attended successfully.
  2. the test is passed. If the test is not passed there will be the opportunity for a re-test (written or oral). In case of not passing the re-test it is recommended to attend the course of the module again with a subsequent second re-test. Already attested experiments will not be accredited. If the second re-test is not passed the module is failed finally.
The module mark is the mark of the test (or re-test).
Learning/ qualification targets
  • Organisation of independent measurements  (observation plan)
  • Dealing with meteorological instruments
  • Knowledge of the latest meteorological measurement procedures
  • Critical interpretation of measurements
  • Written documentation of technical/ meteorological relations
Prerequisites for attending

Passed modules:

  1. Einführung in die Geophysik und Meteorologie
  2. Experimentalphysik I
  3. Experimentalpysik II
Frequency of the offerEvery summer semester
Imparted interdisciplinary competencies and soft skills
