Content

The module consists of a lecture with tutorials that deals with the following topics:

  • Vector and tensor analysis in physics
  • Coordinate systems
  • Differentiate and integrate
  • Ordinary linear differential equations; diffusion equation
  • Green-functions; distributions: the d-function
  • Elementary theory of functions (residual calculus)
  • Fourier transformation
  • Transformation groups
Obligatory literature
  • Großmann, Mathematischer Einführungskurs für die Physik (Teubner)
  • Fischer Kaul, Mathematik für Physiker, Band 1 (Teubner)
  • Arfken Weber, Mathematical Methods for Physicists (Academic Press)
Additional literatureIs announced at the beginning of the course.
Organisation and
teaching style
The course is divided into two parts: Part l takes place weekly with 4 SWS lecture and 2 SWS tutorials in the first six weeks of the semester, part ll is set as a block course three weeks long with 4h lecture at 3 days a week and 3h tutorials 2 days a week within the semester break.
Course assessment, assessment modeThis module is a non-compensable obligatory module. A test is set containing the topics of lecture and tutorials. The successful passing of the tutorials as well as an application is necessary to take part in the test. At the beginning of the following semester a re-examination is set. A failed test can be retried twice. In case of failing the second re-examination the module is failed. A re-participation in lecture and tutorials to retry the test is possible.
The failed module can not be retried and is considered failed. The mark of the test is also the mark of the module.
Learning / qualification targetsMastery of basic mathematical techniques and skills that are necessary to solve physical problems. In addition to "Mathematik für Physiker", this course serves as the basis for the lectures in Theoretischen Physik and provides specifically the needed mathematical tools (especially of analysis and linear algebra).
