Description/
Content
The internship A illustrates basic methods of physical experimentation with fundamental experiments out of the four areas mechanics, thermodynamics, optics and electrics and the relation between theory and experiment.
Obligatory literature
  • Bergmann Schäfer, Lehrbuch der Experimentalphyik Band I-III (de Gruyter)
  • Gerthsen, Physik (Springer Berlin)
  • Tipler, Physik (Spektrum Verlag)
  • Geschke, Physikalisches Praktikum (Teubner)
  • Eichler Kronfeldt Sahm, Das Neue Physikalische Grundpraktikum (Springer)

Additional literatureIs announced at the beginning of the course.
Organisation and teaching styleInternship consists of 20 experiments with each 5 experiments per area of studies. Usually, the registration to the internship happens in the first week of lectures in summer semester. The division into groups of 2-3 persons per experiment happens together with the registration. Before each experiment a preliminary discussion takes place that deals with the theoretical background. Preparation, measurements and analysis have to be documented by writing. After the successful conclusion of the 20 experiments, the registration to the test is supposed to happen within 4 weeks. The appointment for the test is made individually, contents of the test are the theoretical background, the experimental structure and the results of the 20 experiments. The internship spans the 2nd and 3rd semester for students of "Physics": In the 2nd semester, experiments with the extent of 3 SWS take place, in the 3rd semester with the extend of 5 SWS. The internship for students of "Geophysics/Meteorology" spans the 3rd and 4th semester with the same amount in both semesters.
The conduction of the internship as a block course is possible in both courses of studies after an agreement with the person in charge of the module.
Course assessment, assessment modeThis module is a non-compensable obligatory module.
The successful preparation, the conduction and the analysis are attested ungraded. In case of failing, experiments can be retried up to two times or replaced by other experiments out of the relative area. After the successful passing of the 20 experiments, an oral module concluding test follows that can be retried twice in case of failing. If the second re-test is not passed the module is failed finally.
Learning/ qualification targetsConveyance of physical basics based on independently conducted experiments. Determination of measurement parameters and their errors, basics of experimental methods as well as presentation in scientific form.
